Shrimad Devibhagwat Mahapurana: A Brief Introduction

Shrimad Devibhagwat Mahapurana narrates the story of the progenitor of the three worlds, Ma Paramba Bhagwati. In the scripture Ved Vyas Maharshi throw light on numerous Jagdamba Paramba Leela and tales. Amongst the 18 Puranas, Shrimad Devibhagwat Mahapurana has been given an important place and is the 5th Purana in which ‘Parambrahm Parmatama’ has been described in ‘Matr Roop’. The scripture also praises Parambrahm in the form of Ma Bhagwati Aadhyashakti.

There are about 18 thousand verses in Shrimad Devibhagwat Mahapurana. And Maharshi Ved Vyas has divided them in 318 chapters that are categorized in 12 wings.

According to Shrimad Devibhagwat Mahapurana, once in Naimisharanya pilgrimage the Shaunkaidi sages asked Sutji Maharaja to narrate a story of attaining the pleasure of heaven and salvation. With utter happiness, Sutji began to narrate the story by first revering the name of supreme Vishwajanani Mahamaya Ma Paramba. As per Sutji, in the ancient time, Sage Parashar and Satyawati received baby blessings in the form of Vyas, who is responsible for segregating the Vedas and narrated them to his disciples. In order to bring prosperity to earth, Maharshi Ved Vyas composed the 18 Puranas and the epic of Mahabharata and I was the first person who got an opportunity to read this work of art, said Sutji. Amongst these18 Puranas, Shrimad Devibhagwat Mahapurana is believed to have secrets of gaining monetary benefits as well as salvation. Maharshi Ved Vyas himself narrated this composition to Janmajaya.

In ancient time, the father of Janmajaya, Parikshit was bitten by a serpent named Takshak. In order to help his father attain salvation, King Janmajaya worshipped Ma Paramba by following all the rituals and rites. He invited Ved Vyas for elocution of Shrimad Devibhagwat Mahapurana that took 9 days to complete. Therefore, on the 10th day of this event, King Parikshit transformed in to a divine being and obtained heavenly abode from Ma Paramba. King Janmajaya was quite elated to see his father in this divine form.

श्रीमद्देविभागवतमहापुराण- संक्षिप्त परिचय

श्रीमदेवी भागवत महापुराण में तीनों लोकों की जननी माँ पराम्बा भगवती की महिमा बताई गयी है । जगदम्बा पराम्बा की विभिन्न लीलाओं और कथाओं का अमृतपान भगवान् श्री वेदव्यास जी ने इस पुनीत ग्रन्थ के माध्यम से जन-समुदाय को कराया है । १८ पुराणों में श्रीमदेवीभागवतमहापुराण का अत्यंत महिमामय स्थान है । पुराणों के क्रमानुसार यह पांचवा पुराण है जिसमे परमब्रह्म परमात्मा (ईश्वर) के मातृरूप और उसकी उपासना, महिमा का वर्णन माँ भगवतीआध्यशक्ति के रूप में किया गया है ।

श्रीमद्देविभागवतमहापुराण में १८ हजार श्लोक हैं और महर्षि वेद व्यास जी ने १२ स्कंधों के अंतर्गत ३१८ अध्यायों में इस पुराण की रचना की है ।

श्रीमद्देविभागवतमहापुराण महात्म्य के अंतर्गत, एक बार नैमीषारण्य तीर्थ में शौनकादी ऋषियों ने सूतजी महाराज से स्वर्ग तथा मोक्ष का सुख प्रदान करने वाली भगवती की उत्तम महिमा का वर्णन करने वाले इस पुराण को सुनने की इच्छा प्रकट की । इस पर सूतजी महाराज ने आध्याशक्ति महामाया विश्वजननी माँ पराम्बा का ध्यान करके इस पुराण की पावन कथा को सुनाना प्रारंभ किया । सूत जी कहते हैं कि प्राचीन समय में पराशर ऋषि द्वारा सत्यवती के गर्भ से भगवान् विष्णु के अंश स्वरुप मुनि व्यास उत्पन्न हुए, जिन्होंने वेदों का विभाजन कर अपने शिष्यों को श्रवण (सुनाया) करवाया । लोक मंगल की कामना हेतु महर्षि वेदव्यास जी ने १८ पुराणों और महाभारत की रचना करके सर्वप्रथम मुझे ही पढाया । इन १८ पुराणों में से श्रीमद्देविभागवतमहापुराण का वाचन और श्रवण धर्म, क्रम, अर्थ और मोक्ष को प्रदान करने वाला है । महर्षि वेदव्यास जी ने स्वयं जनमेजय को इस पुराण को सुनाया था ।

पूर्वकाल में जनमेजय के पिता राजा परीक्षित को को तक्षक नामक नाग ने काट लिया था । अत: पिता की शुभगति और मोक्ष के लिये राजा ने माँ भगवती देवी पराम्बा का विधिपूर्वक पूजन अर्चन करके नौ दिनों तक व्यास जी के मुखारविंद से इस श्रीमद्देविभागवतमहापुराण का श्रवण किया । इस नव दिवस अनुष्ठान/यज्ञ के पूर्ण हो जाने पर उसी समय राजा परीक्षित ने दिव्य रूप धारण करके माँ भगवती का परमधाम प्राप्त किया । राजा जनमेजय अपने पिता की दिव्य गति देखकर बहुत प्रसन्न हुए ।

शास्त्रों/पुराणों के अनुसार जिस घर में नित्य श्रीमद्देविभागवतमहापुराण का पूजन, वाचन और कथा का श्रवण होता है वह घर तीर्थ स्वरुप हो जाता है और उस घर में रहने वालों सभी लोगों के पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं ।
